About
Cathy’s Kids is a community outreach effort that gathers brand new winter coats, hats, gloves, and scarves for children in need. Started in the late 1990s by Cathy’s anonymous donation of three sets of coats, gloves, and scarves to several needy children in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, Eladio Ruiz made the decision to revive Cathy’s warm tradition in 2010. It has continued to grow and expand over the years.

How it Works
Outreach
-
Each Fall, emails are sent back and forth between CathysKidNJ@gmail.com (run by our very own Gabriella Cuzzola) and various schools that have partnered with us in the past or may be new through word of mouth.
-
A list of children in need is generated by school personnel and sent back to Cathy's Kids.
-
Team Captains/Leaders start each out to their own family, friends, etc. to gauge interest in who would like to donate, and individuals can also respond directly to CathysKidsNJ.
-
In 2013, various individuals took on new roles as "Captains", who are responsible for collecting at least 10 coats. Many of them have graduated to Group Leaders, who have captains under them. The Captain collects from his or her team and then the Leader is responsible for collection from their entire group.
-
-
Whether you choose to donate on your own or to form a team, you will be provided with the age and gender of the child or children you are purchasing for.

Assignments/Collection
-
The Group Leaders receive a spreadsheet with a list of students, and they assign their team captains with a specific assignments.

Delivery
-
As we draw closer to the December delivery, we identify a location where the coats can be brought and stored. Volunteers from Cathy’s Kids then deliver the coats directly to the children at school.
